Do More With a Prosthesis Built for Your Goals

A well-fitted prosthesis can support the activities that matter to you, from work and household routines to hobbies and time with family. We will help you understand what each option can do and where its limitations may be.

At our Overland Park practice, Cotton Orthotic and Prosthetic Associates fits prosthetics for people all over Kansas City. Whether you’re exploring your first prosthetic arm, helping a family member, or referring a patient, we’ll explain what each option can realistically do.

Upper Limb Prosthetics for Every Amputation Level

Partial hand and prosthetic finger devices can restore grip and balance after the loss of fingers or a thumb. For an amputation below the elbow, we start by shaping the socket to your residual limb, then equip the transradial prosthetic arm for the tasks and pastimes that matter to you.

An above-elbow prosthesis (transhumeral) replaces the elbow joint as well, so weight and suspension get extra attention during your fitting. For limb loss at shoulder level, we fit a prosthetic arm from shoulder to hand and design the interface to stay stable and comfortable through a full day.

Hooks, Hands, and Myoelectric Control

Body-powered prosthetic hooks remain the hardy workhorses of upper limb care. They’re durable and precise, and they shrug off the dirt, water, and heavy use that would wear out more delicate devices.

A passive or cable-operated prosthetic hand offers a natural appearance for daily life, while myoelectric devices read signals from the muscles in your residual limb to power the hand or elbow.

We can help you choose based on your goals and the way you spend your days, walking you through what each option does well and where it trades off. Plenty of patients land on both, pairing prosthetic hooks for work with a prosthetic hand for everything else.

Prosthetic Sockets Fabricated On-Site in Overland Park

A prosthesis must snugly fit between the socket and your limb. We take impressions and careful measurements in person, then fabricate your prosthetic sockets on-site at our Overland Park clinic, so adjustments happen quickly and close to home.

Careful fit arguably pays off most with an above-elbow prosthesis, where the design carries extra weight and leverage. As your residual limb changes over time, we’ll adjust or remake your prosthetic sockets to keep your upper limb prosthetics secure.

The Care Team Behind Your Upper Limb Prosthetics

Our clinic is led by Dan Cotton, who has spent more than 25 years working as an ABC-certified prosthetist-orthotist. He coordinates with your physicians and occupational therapists throughout rehabilitation, and family members are welcome to take part. A pre-amputation consultation gives you time to ask questions before surgery.

Support continues for the life of your device. For an urgent problem after hours, call our practitioner at (913) 338-2672.
